She was originally human before exposure to a nuclear reactor turned her into a mutant salamander.
In the animated continuity, Mondo Gecko was an ordinary gecko before he was mutated into a humanoid form.
Although Mondo initially aligned with the evil Mr. X, he reformed and befriended the TMNT.
