How Firaxis made Marvel and XCOM mesh for Midnight Suns

“It was a journey. It was a journey for sure.” The prospect of the celebrated XCOM team, Firaxis, making a Marvel-themed superhero strategy game is mouthwatering. Pairing a team of that talent with a licence of that appeal is inspired. All you have to do is substitute in superheroes, don’t you? Marvel’s Midnight Suns But what if it’s not so simple working with Marvel? And what if the XCOM formula didn’t actually work very well with superheroes?...

Moss: Book 2 makes the leap from PSVR to Meta Quest 2 this July

Quill switch. We knew it was coming, but Moss: Book 2 finally has a release date on Meta Quest 2, with Polyarc’s adorable VR adventure sequel set to make the jump from PSVR on 21st July. Moss: Book 2, which picks up immediately after the events of the first game, once again builds its action around a hybrid of first-person and third-person perspectives as players, in the role of an omniscient spirit, help guide mouse protagonist Quill on her quest to free the land from the clutches of the evil Arcane....

The Quarry review

yo note: Our inaugural playthrough was (unwittingly) via the deluxe version ofThe Quarry. Apologies for any confusion. The Quarry is everything we’ve come to expect from Supermassive’s deliciously bloody brand of horror. Of all Supermassive’s spooky stories, I enjoyed this one most. It’s a fantastic - if potentially polarising - feature. In The Quarry, however, you might jump in and make different choices to save a cherished character. One time, right at the end, it’ll snatch your entire progress away....

Diablo Immortal is the best and the worst of the series all in one

I get huge mixed feelings while playingDiablo Immortal. And it all makes for a hell of an introduction. It genuinely feels like Diablo at its best. There are occasional snags, though. Squint at it on mobile, and it can even look like a genuine next iteration in the series. It feels more alive and more bombastic than Diablo 3, more advanced, more evolved. It’s something that always happens in online multiplayer games like this: they push you towards multiplayer....

I like the look of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's fancy new water tech

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 We’ve been here before. Of course, the fish had no meaningful bearing on Call of Duty’s gameplay. Water in Modern Warfare 2, however, will, Infinity Ward insists. Captain Price and co bob about as waves ebb and flow. Swimming makes little splashes. There’s a foam simulation. Boats produce a wake. Drag them down then Call of Duty stab for the win. Things get even more impressive when you dive underwater....

Mario Strikers: Battle League

The Digital Foundry tech review. Looking at the studio’s history though, it’s perhaps no surprise that Battle League excels. The original Strikers was well received, with a slick 60fps presentation and responsive gameplay. Three years on, and we get Mario Strikers: Battle League. It’s nothing new but the implementation is excellent. In-game, Strikers targets 60fps and delivers this the vast majority of the time without sacrificing resolution. So far, so good then, but cutscenes are a different story....
